A Absorptance:

In regards to a Sunglass Lens ….this is the amount of light absorbed by a specific lens tint or coating. Defined as the specific rate of proportional absorption by any surface to any incident upon the surface ( LIGHT….. UV RAYS striking a lens).

Acetate:

Made by chemical synthesis using cellulose and other chemical compounds to produce a durable plastic that can be used to construct sunglass frames .

Acuity:

The clarity or sharpness of vision provided by various lens materials and/or coatings. Differences vary so much

Acrylic:

Consists of polymers of acrylic acid or acrylates. Sunglass frames can be made from this.Is a common material or has been in the past.

Amber Lens:

Recognized as effectively improving acuity in scattered blue lighting conditions caused by haze, smog or fog. Offering an enhanced clarity in high glare conditions; these are a popular choice for activities such as boating, skiing, and wakeboarding , hunting driving ,mountain biking so many more …….

Anti-Reflective Coating (AR):

An optical coating typically applied to the lens surface of sunglasses , to try to make a effort to reduce the reflection in different glares of the sun.

Arm:

Also referred to as the Temple ... this piece attaches to the frame and stretches behind the Heads ears, holding the sunglasses in place. ….. Side Piece , Frame Arms & Temples of the sunglasses oor Eyewear products such as …….

B

Backside Coating:

Applied to the back of polycarbonate lenses to prevent scratching and for strong protection from the sun and wear and tear..

Barrel Hinge:

A common hinge connecting the temple and the frame of the sunglasses together to form and fit upon your head .

Base Curve:

Found in sunglass terminology to be the amount of curve found in a sunglass frame. A Crazy California Collection Style has a low base curve…..while most sports styles typically have a high based curve and are commonly referred to as wrap-around sunglasses or “Wraps” Athletic active style sunglass .

Base Tint:

Dyes Used during the lens making process to establish lens coloring to the lens for the sunglassses .

Bridge:

The space between the sunglasses two lenses , the part that goes over /above the nose on your face . Designed to set on the nose for support of the glasses and to keep the sunglasses up on your face in the correct spot .

Brown Lens:

Also referred to as an Amber or ,Bronze Lens , this Lens color is believed to enhance clarity, lessen glare and best for outdoor activities Hiking , water sports , sports, hunting, all kinds of activities .

Carbon Fiber:

A common term used to identify carbon fiber reinforced polymer, known for its strength-to-weight ratio! highly durable & lightweight. Also Referred to as A Carbon Fiber Print or Look !

Clear Lens: Lens that has no tint (Simply Clear See Through ) Can (and should) provide 100% UV Protection Which is UV 400! Clear Lens are very popular ...for clubs ,the nite life , for business look , for that SMART LOOK . Bikers like them if in right styles Clear lenses with foam padding etc

Coating:

Applied to the lenses surfaces to provide Fancy colors and image as well Visibility enhancements!

Color-Mirrored:

Color applied to outside of the Lens that appears mirrored with all kinds various colors, tints , such as Blue ,Yellow , Gold , Red, Green or Purple. Etc ., Flash Mirror Coating , Revo Coating , Driving etc ... There is many types and colors

Colored Transparent Frame:

A type of frame that is semi-transparent clear plastic with a colored tints! Many colors avaiable in the market today !

Constant Density:

Refers to the uniformity of tinting in the lenses, it’s a alternative to Gradiant tinting….

Contrast:

The vary of degree of tones and values in eyesight. Lens colors will directly affect the wearer’s perception of contrast; which can improve or diminish vision clarity depending upon the lighting conditions at the time and place

CR-39:

Lightweight plastic made of hard resin, commonly used for lenses for Eyewear products. Highly resistant to scratching and/or shattering, not be confused with Polycarbonate…. This material is also easily tinted to virtually any color. Solid colors to Rainbow Effect Revo tints Etc .

Display Rack:

Used to display and sell sunglasses. Available in numerous styles and materials as well as colors …..commonly seen in hair salons , tanning salons, Gas stations etc ….

Double Gradient:

When Referring to a lens, which possesses a tint across both top & bottom while having a light tint through the middle.The faded look that lots of people like and is a popular selling style .

E

Earpiece:

Typically a plastic or rubber coating or piece that resides along the end of the temple resting on the heads ears. Most commonly seen on sunglasses with a metal or wire frame or temple.Such as Metal Sports or Aviators …...

Endpiece:

Both sides on the outer sides of the frame surrounding the lenses, this portion of the frame is used to attach the temples to the front of the sunglasses frames.

Eyestrain:

Tiredness or fatigue of the eyes, which can be avoided or drastically minimized with appropriate colored lens sunglasses and also simply wearing sunglasses In all lights of the sun...Full Sun, Part Sun , over cast ….

Flash Mirror Coating:

Another term for a standard mirror lens coating applied to lenses, typically in silver, blue or gold.

Frame Arm:

Extends behind the ear, holding sunglasses in place while being worn. Arms, sides pieces , Temples...

Frame:

Part of the sunglasses that lenses are placed within, which temples are attached to the end pieces or hinges.

Frame Rims:

Part of the sunglass frame in which lenses are inserted. Part within the frame that actually holds the lens in place

Full Rim:

Referring to a sunglass style that has a full frame around the lens or lenses

Glare:

Can be caused by a direct or reflected light , causing difficulty seeing. Reflecting glare etc ...One reason to always wear sunglasses !

Gradient Tint:

Provides a transitioning lens tint which is of great quality, typically darker above, and lighter below. A blended tint to seem as if faded lens !

Gray Lens:

A neutral lens believed to be one of the clearest true colors and is an all-purpose tint. Believed to provide the highest level of glare resistance, while staying Crisp and clear !

Green Lens:

Known to increase contrast in low light situations, while reducing eyestrain in bright light…..

H

Half-Rimless Sunglasses:

Eyewear that possesses only the upper portion of a frame rim. Typically found with Metal Sports glasses

Hard Cases:

A style of sunglasses case which has a hard outer shell, frequently open and close too make a fulll hard shell a protective case for your sunglasses !

Hard Coating:

Applied to lenses to increase resistance from scratching and/or breakage , shattering etc ….

Hinge:

The part of the sunglass frame that joins the frame rim and end piece to the temple, while allowing the temples to fold in .

Hydophobic Lens:

A very special coating thats applied to the lens that will prevent moisture and spots on the lenses.

Interlocking Hinges:

Built into the temple of the sunglasses, operates similarly to a barrel hinge. Will appear like a small pin into the frame.

Part of eyewear that you see through. Can be manufacturerd from numerous materials such as Cr 39 and Polycarbonate …..

Lens Tint:

Refers to the density and shading of lens, Etc Smoked tint , Bronze , yellow , green ,blue Gradient tint .......

Metal Frame:

Refers to a frame made of metal or wire, common among many aviator styles of sunglasses,Metal sports frames , Unisex one piece styles etc...

Microfiber:

A material commonly used as a cleaning cloth for Cleaning lenses as well as storage bag for sunglasses and for cleaning as well!

Mirror Coating:

A common coating applied to the lens, noted for its reflective qualities. Comes in many colors !

Nose Pad:

Present on many styles of sunglasses, refers to an oval plastic piece attached , designed to enhance comfort and support weight of frame and is on metal style sunglasses most often but not always .

P

Pad Arms:

Piece of material extending from the frame rim, used to attach the nose pad, capable of providing a customized fit for the wearer.They can be adjusted to fit your nose and or so they fit to look correct to ur cheeks... cheek line.

Polarize:

The ability to restrict and reflect specific frequencies of light rays.

Polarized Lens:

Can be infused during the lens making process or applied as a coating to the lens. The final effect eliminates reflected glare of surfaces. Commonly preferred during outdoor activities. By doctors after eye surgeries as well used heavily for fishing !

Polycarbonate (PC):

A very commonly used plastic created by various carbonate groups. Classified as a synthetic resin. Commonly used to manufacture lenses due to its scratch resistant, lightweight strengeths and superior qualities .

R

Reflected Glare:

Caused by reflected light sources, generally generating a much stronger, and more damaging glare than the originating source. Reflecting cars mirrors metal signs ,,,,,

Revo Lens:

Refers to a mirrored coating that reflects a coloring….commmonly, Red Revo, Blue Revo, Yellow Revo Orange Revo , Gold Revo. Rainbow Revo u name it so many availabe today .

Rimless:

Referring to sunglasses that have only a partial frame rim into which lenses are Attached too.

Rose Lens:

Similar to brown and amber lenses, in that it effectively scatters blue light and enhances contrast greatly.

Scratch-Resistant:

This is a term used to state that the lenses are less likely to scratch and or are more resistant to scrathes ... suppose to withstand scuffs and abrasionmore than normal. Can be a coating applied to lenses, or possessed by Quality materials used to make the lenses.

Semi-Rim

Usally with half-rim and rimless sunglasses , a frame style that forms only the upper portion of the frame rim, usally unisex or women metal or wire frame styles.

Side Pieces:

Another term for the Temples of sunglasses, which extend over and behind the users ears, etc Arms, Frame Arms ear piece….

Smoke Tint:

Commonly refered to the shading applied to the lens to darken and or absorb light rays.

Soft Cases:

Sunglass cases made of usally soft materials. Available in numerous types of materials, patterns, colors and sizes.

Spring Hinge:

A high quality hinge that provides added comfort and durability. Functions in a manner allowing the joint to be more flexable so less breaking and bending !

Sweat Bar:

Common frame piece in metal sunglasses, used to connect the lenses.Etc top bar of glasses …., Now days Know Also As Brow Bar Sunglasses both same and different !

Sunglass Straps:

An accessory for sunglasses that attaches to the Ear piece ends and used to allow sunglasses to rest hanging around the neck. Can be found in useful floating materials, which will prevent losing sunglasses in the pool, lakes, rivers, ocean! HotTubs !!!!

Temples:

Piece of sunglasses extending behind the ears, guiding them to stay in place. Arms , Side Pieces ,Temple …...Ear pieces ….

Temple Tips:

Made of soft rubber or plastic and applied to the tip of the earpieces …(TEMPLE) for added comfort, helps keep sunglasses in place while worn...usally refferd to as End Pieces …...also keep metal from scratching ur head skin as well places u sit them dwn !!!

Top Bar:

A Bar that is the portion of frame that joins lenses on the Top !

Transparent Frames:

A sunglass frame that is clear plastic, often inm different colors as well !

U

Ultraviolet Rays (UV):

Harmful rays of the sun, consisting of UVA, UVB & UVC. Where as UVC is absorbed by the earth’s ozone layer, both UVA & UVB are harmful to the eyes and after prolonged exposure are believed to lead to numerous health conditions.

UV Protection:

Can be applied as a lens coating, or built into the lenses to which they are successfully blocking all UV rays from your eyes !
